NEW DRUGS
The Institute is also seeking drugs to treat mental disorders, cardiovascular
diseases, and infections. It developed an effective anti-influenza drug-remantadin.
The research at this Institute into peptide hormones to predetermine and regulate
physiological functions of an organism has won general acclaim. Study of the
peculiarities and the mechanism of action of peptide hormones is a precondition
for the creation of new preparations which could significantly alter biochemical
and physiological processes. They can also act effectively as drugs and can
stimulate the productivity of animals. Riga chemists combine fundamental
research with the development of a technology for obtaining peptide-protein
bioregulators.
They are also developing regulators for the growth and development of plants,
herbicides, pest control preparations.

Cattle fodder is enriched with the synthetic vitamin A, i. e., carotene and increases
the nutritive value of fodder. The Ministry of Agriculture of the USSR
recommended the application of diludin for carotene stabilization in grass meal. It
has recently come about that diludin is also effective in stimulating the growth of
animals, birds, and fish.
